Introducing Intermediate III in 2026:

Composition, Execution, and Internalization
Designed for photographers who have completed any Intermediate Workshop (Intermediate I or II) and are ready to gain deeper real-world shooting experience.

By now, you’ve learned aperture- and shutter-speed-focused photography fundamentals in the Intermediate I and II Workshops.

That’s a lot of information, and the only way to truly keep it is to internalize it by taking a lot of photos. Through repetition, your decisions become intuitive—you naturally see the light and compositional elements, and you also recognize when a composition won’t work because key lighting factors are missing.

When you see pigeons gathering, raise your shutter speed and get ready for takeoff—anticipation will prepare you for the decisive moment.

When you see skateboarders, increase your shutter speed, move in closer, and shoot from a low angle to amplify motion and energy.

When you see strong light contrast, expose for the highlights to preserve mood and detail.

When you see glass windows or water puddles, use them intentionally to tell an urban story through reflection.

When you see crosswalks and alleyways, think of them as leading lines and discover how they can add to your composition.

This is how you prepare for and execute your shots in real life.

Previsualize the outcome, stay sensitive to light, take a lot of photos.

And make mistakes, then become better in the next shot.

This process is also about training muscle memory. With repeated practice and in-person instructor guidance, your fingers learn how to dial camera settings instinctively, so you’re no longer reacting—you’re responding with intention.

That’s how all the information you learned truly sinks in.

Lighting isn’t separate from composition—it is part of the composition. Learn how to make light work for you, not against you.

This workshop is fully outdoors, with field trips to the Embarcadero Center, Pier 7, Ferry Building and Pier 14.

Attendees are expected to use their own equipment.
