Step into the visual energy of San Francisco and learn how to see the street with a photographer’s eye.


In this hands-on street photography class, you will train yourself to notice light, shadow, color, reflections, patterns, layers, and fleeting moments that are easy to overlook.


You will learn how to use everyday objects and architectural elements to frame your images, simplify busy scenes, and create stronger compositions in changing environments.


As we photograph in Japantown and Pier 39, you will practice responding to different types of light and visual surroundings. You will learn how to position yourself, refine your camera angle, wait for the right elements to come together, and prepare your camera before the moment unfolds.


Throughout the class, you will receive immediate guidance and feedback from the instructor on lighting, composition, camera settings, timing, and visual storytelling. Rather than simply walking around and taking pictures, you will develop a repeatable process for observing, anticipating, and building compelling street photographs.


This class is designed for photographers who want to sharpen their visual awareness, strengthen their composition skills, and discover creative possibilities in everyday surroundings. All camera brands are welcome.

Locations: Japantown + Pier 39 including the area around Ferris Wheel


Attendees are required to bring their own camera and lenses (see FAQ of lens recommendations).


*Policy: This is a non refundable class. Attendees who miss the class will have an option to reschedule to the next one for no additional cost if we are notified at least 2 weeks in advance. Rescheduling can only be done once.

  • What is the prerequisite?

    The Beginner& Intermediate I & II Photography Workshops OR ability to use the manual mode of your camera: Attendees are required to adjust the exposure in the manual mode VERY proficiently.

  • What is the maximum number of attendees in this class?

    Maximum number of attendees: 5-8

  • What lenses are good for this class?

    We will recommend any lenses that have equivalent focal lengths ranging from 24mm-50mm.

  • How is the content of this class different from the Leica Street Philosophy Class?

    While The Art of Street Photography focuses on developing the photographer’s technical and visual awareness—recognizing light and shadow, using compositional tools such as framing, leading lines, reflections, and slow shutter speed, observing subjects, and anticipating decisive moments, the Leica Street Philosophy goes deeper. 


    Instead of concentrating primarily on how to make a strong street photograph, this class explores why you are drawn to certain people, moments, and stories. Through meaningful conversations, human connection, and reflection, students learn to understand their work and the subjects beyond the surface while also discovering how the photographs they create can reveal something about their own inner world. It is a more humanistic, philosophical approach to street photography—one centered on intention, empathy, self-awareness, and meaning rather than technical execution alone. 


    The two classes complement each other, but neither is a prerequisite for the other; you may take them in any order.
