Smartphone Portrait Class

Master the Art of Portrait Photography on Your Smartphone

Ever wonder why someone can buy the latest smartphone with a pro-grade camera, and still take a photo of you so bad it feels person?

Here is the truth: excellent photos aren't built by tech alone. They are created by understanding a few foundational photography concepts, and developing the skill of really noticing your subject and the surroundings.

Since smartphones have become the camera we use to document everyday life, milestone celebrations, and people we love the most, this workshop will help you turn ordinary snapshots into portraits that are truly unforgettable.

The 2-hour Friday Smartphone Portrait class is designed for anyone who wants to take more beautiful, natural, and meaningful photos of their partner, children, family, and friends. It’s also perfect for couples looking for a unique, interactive date night, as well as anyone wanting to level up their personal branding or social profiles.

You’ll learn how to choose flattering angles, work with available light, compose thoughtfully, and guide the people you photograph so they feel comfortable and look their best.

Bringing a unique blend of experience spanning private wealth management, sales, and modeling, your instructor Valerie will teach you exactly how to identify a person's best features, highlight their natural essence, and capture it beautifully.

New to Photosprouts' smartphone classes? No previous experience is required as this class is beginner-friendly, you do not need to attend the Advanced Level Smartphone Photography Workshop as the prerequisite.  We’ll teach the essential concepts of focal lengths, compression, and camera angles from the beginning.

If you’ve already completed our Advanced Level Smartphone Photography Workshop, these fundamentals will be briefly reinforced—but the class will take you further through portrait-specific applications, including flattering angles, lighting, composition, and directing your subject. You’ll strengthen what you already know while learning how to apply it more intentionally to photographing people.

FAQ

  • Do I need to take the Advanced Smartphone Photography Workshop before attending Friday Smartphone Portrait?

No. The Advanced Level Smartphone Photography Workshop is not a prerequisite for the Friday Smartphone Portrait class.

This portrait class is designed to stand on its own, so you can take it even if you have not attended any of our other smartphone photography workshops.

  • How is the Friday Smartphone Portrait different from the Advanced Level Smartphone Photography Workshop?

The Friday Smartphone Portrait class focuses specifically on photographing the people in your life—your partner, friends, family, and children. You will learn flattering camera angles, natural posing, lighting, composition, and how to direct your subject so the portraits feel natural and polished.

The Advanced Level Smartphone Photography Workshop covers a broader range of subjects and photography techniques, including portrait, urban landscape, street and skill life photography through refining the settings, composition, lighting, capturing motion. It is designed to help you use your smartphone camera more creatively everyday across different subjects and situations.

  • How is this smartphone portrait workshop different from the camera portrait one?

The core principles of portrait photography—lighting, composition, posing, and camera angles—are the same in both workshops. The main difference is simply the device you use to capture the photo.

The Smartphone Portrait Workshop teaches you how to apply these techniques using the phone you carry every day, while the Camera Portrait Workshop also covers camera settings, lens selection, focusing, and depth of field.

  • Is this workshop useful for someone who normally uses a camera?

Yes! Even professional photographers have to use their smartphones in some occasions:) We don't always bring a camera but smartphones are always with us wherever we go. Learning the key differences of taking pictures with smartphones and cameras will sharpen your skill in both worlds.

  • Can Android users (Google, Samsung, LG, Huawei etc) sign up for this workshop?

Yes absolutely! We are teaching the art of photography with a smartphone. All the lighting, optics, framing and exposure techniques are the same across different models and platforms. However, for the technical aspect of (E.g the Portrait Mode) this class, we will only share IPhone specific knowledge.

  • What is the class size?

The class size is 8-10 attendees.

  • What if if rains?

Believe it or not, photographers love the rain.

Rainy days are perfect for capturing stunning reflection shots and documenting the vibe of the ciy.  Click here to see rainy day photos.
