The Leica Street Philosophy

A Humanistic Street Photography Class

With Presence, Respect, and Connection

This is not just a street photography class. It’s a philosophy of seeing.

Street photography begins with how you choose to see, engage with, and document the world around you. With a Leica camera, the process becomes more deliberate — encouraging you to slow down, stay present, and document everyday life with care and meaning.

In this Leica Street Photography Workshop, we will take a humanistic approach to photographing the city. Rather than seeing people simply as subjects, we learn to recognize them as individuals—with stories, emotions, gestures, and quiet moments worth noticing. Photography becomes more than the act of making images; it becomes a practice of mindfulness, self reflection, respect, and connection.

The most meaningful photographs are not always made from dramatic scenes or once-in-a-lifetime moments. The craziest things will not happen every day, but the act of continuing to go out, observe, and photograph is what trains your eye and deepens your relationship with the world. What matters most is not what the world happens to bring you, but how you show up to meet it.

Shooting with a Leica naturally slows down the photographic process. It asks you to be present, intentional, and fully aware of your choices before pressing the shutter. Focus, exposure, timing, framing — everything becomes your own decision, not a random accident. Through this slower and more deliberate way of photographing, you will learn to understand not only your camera, but also your own way of seeing.

This workshop includes both a guided Leica street photography photowalk and a monthly critique and editing session.

During the guided photowalk, you will head into the city with an instructor who will help you to be more mindful and photograph the streets with a more humanistic eye. You will learn how to notice gestures, light, composition, and quiet everyday moments while becoming more confident with the Leica shooting process.

After the photowalk, attendees are invited to join our monthly critique and editing session, where we review selected images, discuss what makes a photograph stronger, and refine the final work through thoughtful editing. If you are unable to attend the critique session for your workshop month, you are welcome to join a future month’s session instead.

This class will not be covering basic camera setup from scratch, attendees should already be comfortable using their Leica cameras, including basic exposure settings, focusing, and general camera operation.

Why Slow Down with a Leica?
Shooting with a Leica is different from shooting with many modern cameras. Instead of relying on burst mode or letting the camera make most of the decisions, you have to be intentional with your settings, focus, timing, and framing. This slower process encourages you to be more present, more aware of your surroundings, and better prepared to recognize the decisive moment when it happens.

Why Photograph People with Respect and Humanity?
In photography, we often use words like “capture” and “shoot,” but street photography does not have to feel intrusive. This workshop encourages a more thoughtful and human approach — one that begins with respect for the people we photograph. Instead of seeing people as subjects in a frame, we learn to see them as human beings with their own lives, emotions, and stories. Through this approach, photography becomes a way to bring more kindness, understanding, and humanity into the world.

Why Build a More Meaningful Street Photography Practice?
With Leica, the practice becomes more process-oriented — walking, observing, engaging with the world, and staying open to what unfolds. The most memorable moments may not happen every time, but the act of going out, paying attention, and continuing to photograph is already part of the work.

In this workshop, success is not measured only by the photos you bring back, but by how deeply you engage with the world around you. Sometimes, the best piece of photography gear is simply a good pair of walking shoes.

FAQ

  • How is the Leica Street Photography Workshop different from The Art of Street Photography?

The Art of Street Photography is open to all camera types and focuses on the essential foundations of street photography, including composition, lighting, timing, and the decisive moment. It is a more fast-paced class designed to help students react quickly, recognize strong visual opportunities, and capture dynamic moments in the city.

The Leica Street Photography Workshop takes a slower, more humanistic approach. Through meaningful conversations, human connection, and reflection, students learn to understand their work and the subjects beyond the surface level while also discovering how the photographs they create can reveal something about their own inner world. It is a more humanistic, philosophical approach to street photography—one centered on intention, empathy, self-awareness, and meaning rather than technical execution alone.

In short, The Art of Street Photography is more about sharpening your street photography instincts, while the Leica workshop is more about diving into a deeper understanding and interaction with people, and developing a thoughtful documentary approach to street photography.

The two classes complement each other, but neither is a prerequisite for the other; you may take them in any order.

  • Do I need to own a Leica camera to join this workshop?

Yes. This workshop is designed specifically for Leica users, especially those who want to better understand how to use their Leica camera for street photography with more confidence and intention.

Because the class focuses on the Leica shooting experience — including manual control, focusing, timing, framing, and the slower, more deliberate way of seeing that Leica encourages — attendees should bring their own Leica camera to fully benefit from the workshop.

Typical Leica cameras on the street:

    -Leica M series

    -Leica Q series

    -Leica SL system

  • What is the prerequisite?

Attendees are expected to know how to operate their own Leica cameras: the exposure control, focusing and general settings.

  • What will we focus on during the guided street photowalk?

During the guided street photowalk, we will focus on slowing down, observing the city, and photographing with intention. With a Leica M, every decision — exposure, focus, timing, and framing — is made by you, which encourages a more mindful and deliberate way of seeing.

We will explore how to notice light, gesture, emotion, and quiet human moments, while learning how to approach people and photograph the street with respect. Rather than simply chasing dramatic shots, this workshop is about engaging with the world, trusting your intuition, and documenting everyday life with curiosity and sensitivity.

  • What editing software/ app is needed for the Editing and Critique Session?

    Lightroom or Lightroom Classic.

Attendees will need to bring their own computer for the critique and editing session.

We will be using Adobe Lightroom or Lightroom Classic for image review and editing, so attendees should already have the software installed and be familiar with the basic workflow before joining the session.

  • What is included in the critique and editing session?

The critique and editing session is designed to help attendees reflect on their images after the photowalk and better understand what makes a strong street photograph. Together, we will review selected photos and discuss composition, timing, emotion, storytelling, visual flow, and whether the image communicates the feeling or moment the photographer intended.

This session is not only about choosing the “best” photos. It is about learning how to edit with intention — how to sequence images, refine your visual voice, recognize what worked, and understand what could be improved. Attendees will leave with a stronger sense of how to evaluate their own work and develop a more thoughtful street photography practice.
